The Hyundai Sonata sales numbers, landed third in the midsize segment for the month of August and for the first time in history.

The Sonata was the sixth best-selling midsize sedan in the United States in 2009, trailing the Camry, Accord, Altima, Fusion, and Malibu. In August, Hyundai sold 21,399 Sonatas to eclipse the Altima, Fusion, and Malibu for the month. The 21,399 figure was within striking distance of the Accord's 22,506 units but still a ways off the Camry's 30,764.

The Sonata is Hyundai's top-selling product in 2010 by a pretty significant margin. With more momentum behind the brand, Hyundai looks to grow its U.S. market share to 4.7 percent this year, up from the three percent it held in 2008.
